In the age of sail, seamen were called tars because of the telltale blackening of their hands. Years of handling resin coated riggings left ineradicable marks. 

This young "tar" has come ashore to see what he can see in the sea along the shore. 

Captured in matutinal glory at the moment when one of those rare, perfect lights surrounded the child, everything about the lure of the seashore comes together in this idyllic scene.
