When water power was king, New England thrived. Mills appeared wherever watercourses fell with enough force to turn heavy grindstones, sawblades, or manufacturing machinery. This mill, at Cape Cod's Town of Brewster, was for years the center of a thriving little industrial village turning out everything from overalls to ice cream. Today, only the mill remains, captivating visitors with the shady walks and quiet ponds.

In the spring, when millions of herring return from the sea to spawn, the noise of happy children almost equals the screaming of the gulls that arrive for their dinners of herring alfresco.
