Historians
are divided as to the exact date on which this eloquent example
of Queen Anne Victorian architecture appeared in the village
of Harwichport on Cape Cod. Turn of the century is close enough;
the building's appeal comes from its conical turrets and its
wrap-around porch, not its birthday.
Banker Augustus C. Snow was well past middle age when he had
the house built. Little did he dream that the horse-drawn vehicles
clopping along the quiet street would give way to the busy summer
traffic of today. Nor was he likely to have foreseen his house
becoming "one of the Cape's most elegant and exclusive
inns, catering to a small number of discerning guests."
Fine lodging, weddings, private receptions, and afternoon teas
prove the Augustus Snow House to be a multi-faceted gem.
